It will also serve as a platform for discussing key issues in the maritime sector, as well as opportunities for collaboration among the region's ports.

History of the ASEAN Ports Association (APA)

The APA was formed against the backdrop of growing regional cooperation in Southeast Asia, which began with the formation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1967. ASEAN was created to promote economic growth, social progress, and cultural development among its member countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Following ASEAN's establishment, the need for a parallel alliance in the maritime sector became apparent, leading to the birth of the APA.

The inspiration for the APA came during a sports festival in Sabah, Malaysia, in 1974, where representatives from various port authorities saw the potential benefits of a formal regional cooperation framework. This idea was championed by Mr. R. Geotina of the Philippines and Mr. J. E. Habibie of Indonesia, who are now remembered as the founding officers of the APA. Their vision materialized in 1975 with the official formation of the ASEAN Port Authorities Association (APAA), which was later renamed the ASEAN Ports Association (APA).

The APA was established with the objectives of promoting the exchange of information, harmonizing trade practices, and facilitating trade among ASEAN ports. The association quickly grew in scope and influence, becoming a vital platform for addressing the challenges and opportunities in the region's port sector.Over the years, the APA has played a critical role in the development and modernization of ports across Southeast Asia. The association’s initiatives have focused on improving port operations, enhancing regional trade, and fostering closer ties among member countries. The APA has also expanded its membership to include ports from Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar, further strengthening its role as a unifying force in the region's maritime industry.
